Clay chimineas are fired in kilns to remove organic matter and close the pores to prevent cracking. They can be used outdoors all year long however they shouldn't be exposed to the elements for too long.

Origins

The terracotta chiminea stoves of the past were designed to function as radiant heaters as well as ovens. They were used to help tribesmen endure the cold desert nights in their home. Design

Typically the potters would roll long snakes of clay into a cylindrical shape, and then smooth the clay and create the chiminea's bowl and neck. The rim of the clay is often decorated with carvings or patterns.
