Three Wheeled Buggies

Three-wheeled buggies are ideal for walking around the neighborhood or running. Their compact design makes them easy to manoeuvre even in tight areas.

For an easy ride, opt for a pram that has air-filled tyres. Look for models with a 360deg front swivel wheel. They are prone, however, to punctures. Be prepared with an emergency repair kit.

Sturdy frame

Recent figures have been released that show that the three-wheeled buggie - a symbol of the noughties of more money than sense is on the verge of disappearing. They've been replaced with four-wheelers that can handle a wider range of terrain, while also looking elegant and easy to push.

The rule is that the bigger the wheels are, the easier it'll be for your buggy to deal with bumpy ground and rough pavements. The larger wheels on both the front and back also makes it much easier to maneuver and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried the double buggy 3 wheels with a newborn as well as a 3 year old and found it was able to withstand cobbles, grass, rough roads, dirt tracks, and kerbs. Kath said it felt sturdy to push, and very stable on difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable so need occasional pumping) have suspension built-in, which was very comfortable for my kids.

Another thing to take into consideration is the size and shape. It is important for the seat to be large enough to allow your child to be comfortable and to allow them to lie down. Certain three-wheel buggies have an option to lie flat completely while others allow the parent to be facing one.

A great choice for tackling off-road and muddy trails is the Roma Atlas. The buggy can be used as a one-person unit from birth, and then expands to take two children when your family expands. It is suitable for infants and toddlers from birth until age 4, and comes with a bumper with a rain cover, an upgraded 5-point harness, and a huge padded seat. The storage options are good too, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets in the hood, and a handy pouch on the back of the seat unit.

Wheels with a greater diameter

Larger wheels will give your buggy more stability while driving on rough terrain. This is especially beneficial for buggies designed for off-road use. They also make it easier to navigate the pushchair through tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have swivel front wheels to help you navigate around tight corners, whereas others are designed for running and come with fixed front wheels that lock to improve the speed and stability with which they can be driven. This is also useful if you hit the kerb or a tree. The front wheel will lift slightly to keep it from hitting it.

Many 3 wheeler pushchair off road wheeled pushchairs have air-filled tyres that allow them to navigate a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They're also lighter. They are more prone to punctures, so you will require a repair kit and spare inner tubes on hand.

Some of our favourite 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. These buggies, according to MFM's Kath, have larger wheels which according to her "perform well on gravel roads, grass and market town cobbles" and are able to move up and down kerbs. They also have a suspension that, according to Kath "smooths out bumps very effectively".

Buggies with larger wheels can be quite wide, and can be difficult to fit in tight spaces. This could be a problem if you are using it as a jogger, or need to fit through doorways that are narrow when out and about. Fortunately, many models come with compact 3 wheel stroller folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels to make compact storage.

Easy to maneuver

One of the main benefits of a three-wheel buggy is that it is much more maneuverable especially with a child in tow. The way in which they are built ensures that the front wheels spin at a whim and are incredibly easy to manoeuvre which makes them perfect for difficult terrains like cobbles, parks, bumpy pavements and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried an all-wheeler with her toddler. she said: "The Terrain is a joy to maneuver in rough terrain. The swivel wheel front was particularly useful." I was also awed by how well it dealt with kerbs using the hand-operated break. I found it to be extremely steady when I was driving downhill or over uneven ground."

The only drawback of this incredible mobility is that the 3 wheel buggy's larger wheels sometimes mean it has to struggle in tight spaces - something to consider if you live in a urban area. If this is a concern then a 4-wheel buggy may be a better option for you.
