Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shut down.
